We have a name!

Azizi (Ah-ZEE-ZEE) "Azi" "Az"

Fans cast their votes in an online naming contest, narrowing the options down to a pool of 20 names. Fans ultimately picked ‘Keeper’s Choice’, passing the big decision to the beloved giraffe care team. The team chose to honor one of the top 20 name selections voted on by our fans.

Azizi, having a few origins, has meanings that truly identify with the personality of the young male giraffe. Precious, powerful, beloved, and “the mighty one” are descriptive of our independent calf, that will someday grow to a possible eighteen feet and weigh over 2,000 pounds. Other top contenders included Finnegan, Apollo, and Zumi.

Oliver and April welcomed the healthy calf on Saturday, March 16th. He’s now weighing in at over 170 lbs, and stands 6’ tall!

Big day for our little giraffe!

His first steps outside were cheered on and observed by both mom and dad!

Our calf is now over 170 lbs and standing 6’ tall!

April`s baby name will be revealed tomorrow

April, Oliver and baby

Did you guys decide on a name for this thing yet or what? I gotta finish their medical records

He is co cute

Good morning everyone!

We thought it was hilarious how brave our little bull was after the keepers were out and he had the stall to himself. He sure showed them what he could do!

He is a pistol and so full of energy. We need some of that. Older you get you feel it.

New exclusive content is up and our calf as of today ( March 29th) is just shy of 170 pounds and even a cameo of Tajiri in the new content

Healthy, Thriving, Gaining, Growing!

Round 2 of voting has begun.

We are now into Round 2 of name voting for our calf!

Now weighing just shy of 160 lbs, our little boy boldly displays his rambunctious personality and antics to our giraffe cam viewers on a daily basis

Baby already nibbles at hay but really is not consuming, baby will begin to likely take more interest in solids between month 3-6

Even an animal momma loves, values and cares for her little one even as it's on it's way into the world. What a sad reflection on human mommas who are aborting their babies right up to the moment of birth, and even then.

A sweet moment of April

March 22st Morning update

The calf is growing and gaining. Calf weighed in at 139 birth and now shy of 150

Height is 5'11" – growth is slower than gain

April encourages the calf to stand, to stay mobile, and to sometimes nurse

April has recovered wonderfully from the birth

Calf and mom can venture outside when temps are safe again

April starting to push/calf emerge while laying down was a shock to us all

Our calf continues to progress and develop!

We are very happy to report the calf continues to gain weight, which indicates proper lactation and nursing!
April and calf are both learning the daily routine and allowing our team to get hands on, to perform wellness checks and record necessary data.

April the Giraffe Calf

April the Giraffe`s Calf

Make no mistake, every calf born counts!
With wild giraffe populations plummeting, now more than ever, successes in responsible propagation programs are continuing to provide strong genetic diversity in captive management programs. These bloodlines are the future bloodlines that can reestablish wild populations.

Much like the success in recent years with the reintroduction of the once extinct in the wild, scimitar oryx, to native ranges; captive management programs do serve a purpose, and do send animals "home"!

What must we do?
Conserve and preserve natural habitats, to give them a fighting chance. Support conservation initiatives and sustainable practices that can allow human and animal to coexist. It can, and does happen!

Our little guy is growing and gaining

Everything has truly been text book thus far for development and behavior!

April the Giraffe and New Baby bring us zero concern – 48 hours is a fragile period of time and they aced it

Now we all breath a little easier – and can focus on the fun of naming the calf!

We will gain much more weight than inches initially!

Baby is good with staff – he comes up to the fence lines and is quite curious of everyone

When we do our wellness checks on him, he is caution initially but then lets the exam occur without fuss

All will return to normal soon – its just these first few days we need to really get hands on to collect necessary data

For those of you that are interested, here is what the covering over Jr's hooves looks like. It is almost entirely worn off during his exam the following morning.

April the Giraffe and New Baby

April the Giraffe and New Baby

We captured this sweet moment today of baby and Dad, Oliver.

Baby Boy and Dad

We are happy to report, the new calf has had a strong and adventurous first couple days of life!

The little guy is up 5 lbs from yesterday! To us, this means mom is producing milk and baby is nursing successfully!

His ossicones (black hair tufts at this time) have stood up on his head!

The calf has been observed by Giraffe Cam viewers, stretching those legs in full stride, galloping around mom, April! She certainly has her hooves full with this one!

So what's next? We need a name! :  Vote HERE

April the Giraffe and Her New Baby

Welcome to the world little one!

Early this morning, April’s behavior suggested a calf was on the way. Team members cleaned and prepared and then left the barn to give April her space.

Approximately 11:00 am, Jordan entered the barn to check April, who laid with her back end just out of camera view on both camera angles. Upon Jordan’s entry to the barn, April stood up and revealed that she had in fact been in labor and the calf’s hooves and first 8-10” of leg were emerging!

Labor alerts were quickly initiated, Veterinary and park staff called to the barn and we watched with over 300k other viewers!

Approximately 12:43 pm, our calf made its big “splash” into the world! Dr Tim quickly identified we had welcomed a baby boy!

Calf and mother bonded quickly.
Calf was on it’s feet around 1:27 pm
Nursing was observed 1:51 pm

Teams have since left the barn to allow mom and calf to continue their bond and build strength.

Tomorrow, a full exam of the calf will take place and provide weight and height.

Thank you for all of the support and cheers from around the world, as we welcomed our newest calf!

March 16th Update April the Giraffe

2: 20 AM live update

April hasn't laid down in about 3, 4 hours?

April looks like a pro and has it all under control. She looks quite content right now. A true champ!

She's playing with the bag a lot more aggressively than she normally does. It seems to be a stress-reliever for her right now.

April looks good. She’s walking through the contractions, keeping her energy up with snacks and drinking. She’s awesome.

March 15th EVENING Update:

"I Survived the Glitch of 3/15"

Quite the afternoon for cam viewers and chatters!

Many tuned in and witnessed the same thing Jordan did, which had him rushing to the park! Was that hooves? The "bubble" (amniotic sac)? She's licking and it appears SOMETHING is there!

Kyle cleans stall today

A race to the park and a few phone calls, Dr Tim & Jordan arrived at the same time. What did they discover? A giraffe not in labor and the camera had a serious glitch! On screen, was a frozen frame from the afternoon, in the Birds Eye view, and a delayed webcam view. Better now than the big moment to discover this issue!

After some help from our techie Adam, and a lot of cam switches back and forth, all was well. But, it may have taken chat a good 15 minutes to settle – but we are now back on track!

As for April, what can we say?
All signs point to a Go Time!
Discharge present in photo – full udder!

Healthy, Happy, Hungry.

April the Giraffe Latest Update

Live Q & A with Jordan Patch March 14 Evening update

We were once told april's prior calves had produced calves, we honestly can't confirm but we were told this in 2017

April is our only giraffe to ever calf at the park, this will be our second, we have never had a rejection

We are getting daily discharge from april… steady drip/snotty substance

As the calf moves around you will see the dimples/pits appear on aprils hips – a good sign

In the case you miss  14th March Evening April the Giraffe Updates: The “Belly” Meets the “Hip”

The antibodies that produce immunity are in that colostrum the calf will first drink! a must to thrive.

April's been down for an hour now

I get sleep when I can, these are exciting but stressful times

There`s a lots of tail up

Anything with a mouth can bite but that is not their defense of choice instead they kick or swing neck/head

Will April have a night delivery?

I dont know

The intention is for Johari to stay with Tajiri. could oliver breed with her some day maybe  but not the immedita eplan

Dr Tim has been in twice today

Giraffes can take a few steps backward but not for many strides

Giraffe teeth generally go without issue but things can flare up. Hoof care is a serious part of husbandry natural ware or the must be tended to

Giraffes have on average 10 calves in a life time

We are not worried about other cams or births at this time, our focus is her ( April the Giraffe)

April can be protective before and after birth

We do not vaccinate the calves until about a year old, for rabies

Hay showers are just something april does, there is no rhyme or reason

April has granted a few wishes for make a wish

We do not feed our giraffe fruit

The discharge we are seeing is all normal, there`s no concerns, in fact  again text book pregnancy thus far

Tairij started nibbling pellets soon after birth! not enough for substance but they have pretty quick interest! weaning is anywhere from 6-8 to 12-15 months depends on the calf and mom

April is full of tricks I am sure

Now that is a well made stall

I think that stall is fit for a prince or princess,  we will see

Our carrots are california organic

Thank you to everyone willing to support

Marcht 14th evening update on April :

Lucky Number 15?

Day observations revealed a lot of manifested pressure on also pacing (walking through contractions?).

Corey & Alexis' evening Keeper Check confirmed significant white, thick, discharge.

Behavior had the team caution. Cautious enough that mammary development photos were not taken, and distance was kept. While her interest in treats was obvious to cam viewers, she was cautious of those around her.

Keeper's also observed "spasms" in the muscles where the "belly" meets the "hip", which could be contractions.

Based on all observations, as a precaution, teams did bed down the stall with additional substrate in the event of an evening or early morning delivery.

So – Lucky Number 15?
Tajiri was born on the 15th of April, to a 15 year old & 15 foot tall April, after a 15 month gestation…. tomorrow's date? The 15th.

Here is the big lady in all her glory.

March 14th Morning Update on April the Giraffe

Does anyone remember during the hours leading up to Tajs birth that April stretched her hind leg way back for a minute or 2 and then we were off to the races

She is very focused this morning

April`s posturing is of interterest in the 14th March morning

The way April is standing makes her neck so long. She is so beautiful

April`s signs that are encouraging this morning, the dip her hips, visible on the cam, we want that movement there would suggest contractions

The keepers turn on the lights when they come in and they switch the camera.

Yesterday for about an hour it looked like Aprils' hoohah shrunk could hardly see it then baby kicking etc..,

Big hanging net feeders are 3'X3'.

March 13th EVENING Update:

Many viewers were shocked to see D. Tim in the barn around 5:30 am this morning. While it was a scheduled early stop, April's behavior had him reconsidering his day's plan. April was not responsive to some of the Dr.'s treat offerings and hands on examination. This behavior could suggest some of that trance like focus during the labor process – but yet again – the day carried on, along with April's antics!

She spent the day eating & resting and enjoying enrichment feeders!

Afternoon checks were as expected, so Jordan & Dr Tm thought they would remind April of just how fun and cute baby giraffes are! Perhaps we tried too hard?

Udders full, back end swollen, muscles/ligaments relaxed… Ready when you are April!

Morning March 13th April the Giraffe latest update:

An early check by Dr Tim yielded some observations of behavior that could suggest our girl could be nearing in this morning, she changes on the hour anymore!

In short, normal check this morning. Behavior has us wondering. She is a hair off, but again, curveballs daily.

Dr Tim was in earlier today, which was planned. Behavior would suggest she is a bit off today, which could mean we are nearing. She keeps us guessing. Mom and calf are well.

Dr Tim and I are chatting. No concerns. Definitely observations.

In the case you miss Dr Tim Q & A:

Dr Tim Predicts April the Giraffe Will Give Birth on April 15th.

Dr Tim: April`s Baby Moving and Her Breathing, Carrot Cam; Closer to the Big Day

Dr Tim: April`s Baby Moving and Her Breathing, Carrot Cam; Closer to the Big Day

April was a grandmother long before 2017! She is 17 years old!

We anticipate warmer temperatures these next few days,  teams moved snow in the yard yesterday which will allow Oliver some outside time

We may see twitches, and pulsing, and contractions of sorts. Are they full blown labor contractions just yet? We cant guess, we will know when time

Why would April go into retirement after birth? Curiosity?

If she is healthy and producing strong viable calves, we would do as all other facilities on earth do  and keep her in the program

Decisions are made by a vet, based on science

Oliver may go outside today if temps jump high enough, April will likely not. too much risk at this time, there is still some wetness in the yard

April has the barn for her process, uninterrupted…. should an inquiry come to us, we will gauge it accordingly

April stomping feet could be her naturally working through contractions

Let nature take its courseabor is not induced

March 12th EVENING Update:

"Feeeeed Me Corey…"
– April in the voice of Audrey II (little shop of horrors)

You saw it, we saw it, Oliver saw it! April ate all day long!
A big appetite is a good thing, but what does it mean? Much like human mothers might report an increased appetite before labor, our April could be experiencing the same thing. As much as we try not to compare animals to humans – it is the best way to explain and allow some of you to relate!

We continued to observe raised and extended tail movements, also swell of the back end with added pressure, throughout the day.

Tonight we wanted to focus on the udders a bit more in our photos. Pictured, you can see the full udder and four teats. Notice the teats presenting the white wax caps, that we so heavily talked about back in 2017. The wax caps are produced by the body to clean out the milk ducts, and preserve them, while keeping all the nutritious colostrum and milk inside until the calf's nursing.

Now naturally being Taco Tuesday, some Mexican was just what the Doctor ordered (literally)!

Continue to watch, engage, learn, and communicate what you learn on our platforms about giraffes and this journey we are on. Conservation Through Education!

We've started rolling out our 2019 season Merch & Apparel!

11: 00 AM

March 12th update April

She is gazing a lot today

We do not work with Australia zoo, However we work with a network of facilities here in the U.S

Tail raising is a result of pressure, I would assume it is involuntary/muscle extension

Giraffes sleep both standing and sitting, the sleep cycle is just a few minutes at a time, sleeping a total of only a few hours per day

We will not induce or intervene nothing would suggest a need to at this time and just that give it time.

Giraffes can go outside for short stints in the 40s, we may se that tomorrow, teams today are clearing the yard of ice and snow

The fall a calf makes from mom at birth is designed by nature…. risks are minimal, in fact the fall serves a few purposes to help the calf, severe the umbilical cord, stimulate breathing

The hay bed may continue for a short bit post birth… but much of her weight will be alleviated when a 150lb calf is born!

We do offer the licks at times, but the fortified diet our giraffes get have all the levels they require for healthy life

All of our spent hay/bedding/manure is composted and then spread in our hay supplier fields

Genetic testing is easily done in partnering laboratories

There is no reason for Tajiri or meet his sibling to be very honest. Giraffes are not human like, he will want to breed her or fight him, same as dad. neither is good. We don`t sacrifice science and safety.

Much of our vet treatments can be done on site, surgeries or more in depth care we can move animals to dr tim or into our quarantine/hospital barn.

More:  Dr Tim Veterinarian Update on April the Giraffe Animal Adventure Park

Giraffe maturity,  males on avergae 3 years, females 5 years

Giraffe can average 10 calves in a life time! birthing up into their mid to late 20s!

Giraffes are covered in a fine fur. We have april laying down throughout the day, hay bed or not

We celebrate the birthdays of all our giraffes but tajiri on world giraffe day in June

Giraffes are ruminants which means they have multi, chamber stomachs and bring their food back up as cud to get a second round of nutrients, the chewing you see is likely cud chew

The park currently is home to 4 giraffes

Sense of humor keep s us sane

I am hoping, viewers do not think Dr Tim actually gave April candy and pickles

We have been contaced by a few facilities already regarding potential calves that are good matches for lineage, there is no decision are ever made until its time far from now

A little throwback to Taj’s first day outside!

(Evey update will be post here, please follow this thread )

In the case you miss this morning : Dr Tim Veterinarian Update on April the Giraffe Animal Adventure Park

March 12th Morning April the Giraffe update:

Wagginng the tail at this time could be a response to a contraction, pressure, movement in the body/back end. They also do this normally but exessvie movement would suggest other curcumstances

Dr Tim will sometimes treat April the Giraffe with some round sweet potatoes

Aminiotic sac will be that " Bubble" we refer to, we should see that first unless already torn and a hoof apprears

Pressesure and movement are all good signs of April the Giraffe, baby must get wedged into that birth canal, will begin to stimulate the cervix and should lead us into the big moments, we update on April the Giraffe everyday

April is full mane is intact, she has blonder spot in the mid sections, camera would suggest its not there but it is

The birth situation and monitoring April is not stressful as it is exciting, there are outside factors much more stressful, we are anxious and nervous

You can read full : Morning April The Giraffe Update 2019: Does it hurt April the Giraffe to Lay Down ?

March 11th EVENING Update:

"Ah, push it, p-push it real good" – Salt N Pepa

Repeat after me, p-push it real good!

This afternoon, teams assembled at the park based on Giraffe Cam & Keeper observations of what appeared to be contractions, with "pushing". Every few minutes, April would extend her tail and her back end would bulge an additional couple inches away from the body due to pressure. This was observed repeatedly, along with discharge – prompting cleaning, bedding, and preparedness. Lo and behold, April was being April.

Her udders are full. Back end in full swell. Discharge is being observed. Nothing left to do but PUSH!

In the spirit of wanting to "assist" April with advancing, Dr Tim has returned to tried and true induction science – Candy & Pickles!

He says close, I say Imminent.
Tomato – Tomata!

In truth, April is well. The pregnancy is predictably unpredictable, and we turn out the lights another night to see what the evening and morning hours bring.

11: 08 AM March 10th update

Our team are watching April the giraffe, rest assured

Everyone is not a game or joke. We are monitor and will change views to get better angles and pictures if needing to for reference on our end

April recieves 1-2 vet checks a day , she is in great shape as is the pregnance. to suggest needed veterinary care or attention is a bit of an overreach, please support our team

March 10th EVENING Update April the Giraffe

"A little to the left…"

Both Keeper and Dr Tim reports today noted relatively normal interaction with them after the initial morning routine, while the cam viewers did continue to note and see periods of gazing when no one was in the barn.

There was interest in grain this evening versus minimal to none this morning.

The slight jumps viewers observe on the cam are the result of pressure and calf kicks, so w do know baby is alive and well, and positioning.

Our team has no concern for April, and continue to monitor, but we will admit – all signs pointed to a weekend calf. Again – we watch and wait.

Promising and new is that April's tail is now hanging and pinning to the left a bit, which is appropriate and expected positioning for the big moment.

3: 00 PM March Update:

Dr Tim report: Perhaps : A trip to the chiken coope ( egg on face) . April  has us guessing

March 10th Update April the Giraffe

Could today is THE DAY?

Yesterday-we did anticipate calving, prompting bedding down and day long observation.Today we continue to monitor. You can see April zoning out,all part of the process. We simply wait for the "Bubble"

Pregnancies get easier with time

April has us all scratching heads so its anyones guess

Ossicones are great for getting at itches and males use to neck or fight

Male or female calf It must move on in time it ccan not breed with its siblings or parents and thats our goal, genetically strong diversification of captive management popolations

A female cafl could stay longer than a male due to the length of time till maturity

Changes you see with the body and bulges is the calf moving

We have no concern for April today, we simply are waiting for her to let us know its time

From our first giraffe birth at the Park to our secon I thought we were better at not getting over excited that was proved wrong yesterday

Male or female is the sex of the calf not the gender ( bringing science back to the matter), we weill notify the world soon after birth of our calf`s sex

We did have a vistiong facility for a planned visit that stopped in

Calf hooves harden soon afterbirth they are soft intially for an easy dilivery for mom

Have you been sleeping at all? Haha okay here's my actual question. Are the extra shavings and hay being put down in advance because of how April reacted to keepers in her space last time?

We are beeding heavy in advance to mitigate stress when it is go time. We are far enough along to warrant the extra at this time . Gazing, neck out, head down; sign we want to see indicate movement, pressure perhaps contractions.

If they cycle every 17 days and cycle all year, how do you keep them from breeding when you don't want them to?

Contraceptive are an option also asbtinence

Giraffe will burp, sneeze, pass gas, etc…, What you saw as hcupps yesterday were actually very strong kicks that caused her to Jump one every 8-10 secons for a short stretch Dr Tim and I were feet away, do not miss April The Giraffe Labor Updates: Dr. Tim Shares Photos, Q & A

We can only calf positon from external posturening at this time

Udders are full still no change

Hard to lay down, perspective you are nine months pregnant now bend over and tie your shoes without looking

We are all clear at the moments

April has not touched her grain this morning

I have a clue but we are close

"Fool me once…" – Everyone Watching

Cory’s morning reports had Jordan & Dr Tim both reporting to the park and assessing April's progression. All physical & behavioral signs indicate we are simply waiting for the big moment. The decision was made to apply extra bedding to the stall for the anticipated birth.

More than days prior, viewers witnessed April's behavioral being extremely off. Standing in one place, staring at the wall, and simply not responding to activity around her.

April the Giraffe Update

Without question we are there – its a matter of when.

Comparing April 2019 to 2017

March 9th

March 9th Morning update Diva April

Giraffes pregnant or not can slip a little when standing or laying, not hing out the ordinary and once again April has proved she`s not mad of glass but instead an 100* wild animal

It`s great to care and be " invested" in April but end of day she is a big strong animal , she`s got this

Giraffe do not sleep like humans. They sleep a few minutes at a time and total maybe a few hours of sleep a day

Everything is okay this morning

Impatiently waiting to kiss the camera (eat more carrots)…

What would suggest it isn’t lol. Nervous gir-aunts!

Dogs senses are much more advanced than that of giraffe and other hoof stock

Think of things very basic with animals. Sad or hurt animals don’t respond, they stay away, they stop eating – they show obvious stress

April and baby can go outside as soon is the yard is safe ( snow and ice free) and temp are in safe zone

Happy animals eat, interact, have normal routines

Naturefinland. Allow me to explain enrichment. If enrichment is offered all day every day it becomes furniture to them and part of every day. That’s why zoos and parks have schedules. It’s something

For the animals to look forward to but also receive the stimulation from them which is the 100% intention. I ask you – what’s a bored giraffe look like? I see a giraffe that just got up from resting

They know their routine.

Oliver has never hurt any one but we also do not tak the risk, a bull is a bull and is treated as such

Ear movements can indicate thei response to stimuli and are also moved to hear in the deired direction

April will not leave Animal Adventure Park . When we open May 1st we expect all giraffes to be exhibit

Calf sex preference would be female, allow us to contributes a girl to the captive propagation programs but naturally a healthy little one is our want

April is without question very close are we hours, a day or so not positive

Giraffe hooves do need trimmed/ shaped if not naturally worn cats

We do have a contest to bring a winner to the Park. Do you know one giraffe can cost $50.000 a year to care for when factoring feed, labor, exhibit maintaince, heat etc…,

Giraffes are not the most labor intensive species we have but are the largest which means all jobs with them are big jobs

April`s tongues blue or purple to protect from the sun while she browse all day

Letture is reserved for trainng exerises

Alexis has the evening off from night checks

Our flooring is a pine bedding, a big bed made for two

April did not want friends visiting overnight. April was born at the Catshikk game farm

April and Ollie's birthday are in June. It's celebrated on World Giraffe Day which is June 21. AAP celebrates World Giraffe Day early on Father's Day which is June 16 this year.

April seems restless tonight. Up and down a good bit. Good sign

April laid down at 11:27pm EST…this time. She laid down earlier for 1 1/2 hours.

It seems like she spend more time on her feet than laying down.

Every time she plops down, I think something's going to come shooting out her back end!

How old is April?

April is 17

She went down for a rest just about 2 hours ago and got back up about 35 minutes later.

When she was at the end with Taj she only layed down for 30 mins at a time maybe like an hour 3 or 4 times a night

March 8th EVENING Update

MAKE 'EM WAIT" – April the giraffe

There is not much more we can say or report; she is ready to go!

Udders are filled, consistent discharge, calf has shifted around a bit! Back end is swollen, ligaments loosened, tail raising and to the side a bit. These are all signs we are there!

She could go at night, dawn, the day or at dusk!

So, pass the time with a review of when the world welcomed Tajiri the Giraffe April 15th 2017!

Jordan Patch Interview and give some updates on April the Giraffe:

Comparing April 2019 to 207

March 8th

Morning 8th Update April the Giraffe Animal Adventure Park

April was born at the Catskill Game Farm in Catskill, New York. She resided at the farm until it closed in 2006, when she was relocated to Adirondack Animal Land in Broadalbin, New York

April is likely hovering around that 1800+ range. The bubble will emerge white/cloudy likely . This morning April is where expect her to be, there won`t be many more drastic changes

April was given her nam elsewhere. April`s personality has aways been once of calm demeanor and seeking keeper attention ( most treats)

Last calf base on age? April is young if you are discussing calving giraffes in their mid to late 20s have calves each year at zoos all over the courtry

I am not sure why everyone demands and pushes

Her retirement from propagation, what about her pregnancy this time or last time would suggest to any viewer there is concoern, we all scratch our heads when we hear this

Discharge is obviously the precursor to the big show, it can start days prior and then wham, we are having a baby

April the Giraffe Youtube Animal Adventure

April the Giraffe Youtube Animal Adventure

April trasitioned to the Park andout team pretty quickly and Oliver at first she did not leave the bran much and we discorvered she wanted softer footing in the yard we redid the yard

We have not one concern when April lays down, she is days from birthing ask a full tern woman to tie her shoes in a squatting position, Its a part of pregnancy

Pregnancy last time to this time is about the same for expextations and April`s condition and behavior, each is different but generally follow a template

Who will be in the tonight?

Corey and Alexis were in last night and tonght Corey and Kely , you will see Corey at every check now . Our giraffes receive a rabies vaccine, a healthy calf would warrant welcoming our gest May 1st.

Dr Tim: April`s Baby Moving and Her Breathing, Carrot Cam; Closer to the Big Day

March 7th EVENING Update:

"We got, What we wanted!"

From this morning, to this evening, April has profoundly advanced.

We have consistent stringy discharge with the desired clear/cloudy coloration. This would support why April was spending a bit of time at her back end this afternoon.

April also spent some time cleaning the udder area. Full blown fill of the udders, with coloration change in the teats was noted by both today's vet check and keeper check.

520

Some of the focused pacing behavior has been observed early evening, which is a tell tale sign of what's to come. This should continue to increase.

Extended periods of tail raising suggest movement and pressure.

Perhaps start reevaluating your weekend schedule?

March 7th Moring update April the Giraffe

Things continue to progress well. She gave us quite a show today and we are getting ever closer to the big day

April's doing well and looking good. She was really working the system tonight to get as many carrots as possible. Even when a guy's pockets are empty, she came at me from every angle and searched all the nooks and crannies

Midnight update:

Hay bed was nice, it get it now

Giraffe do comunicate via humming

I would not say April`s birthing and experience has advance veterinary medicine but has without question changed this way zoo`s do things, let`s people in and increased transparency.

Tail ags are not like happy dog wags

April had lots of internal movement today, calf moved off the right side according to Dr Tim, so lots of pressure

Lettuce is really reserved for training exercises

April is a giraffe, no human year calculation, we make that up for dogs to make our selves feel better about limited lifespans, It is true

Oliver has feelings for April every 14-16 days when she cycles, they enjoy company and interactions but again not like human emotion

Female giraffes are the carries of future generations

Capive giraffes are no living up to the mid or late 20s and even hitting 30

Giraffes have blue or purle tongues and an adaptation that occurered to protect the tongue form sun exposure

The pigmentation only changed on the first 6-8" ( Which is all thats often exposed when browsing

Giraffe are not monogamous, the are nomadic bachelors breedings as they come across receptive female

March 6th Evening Update April the Giraffe

"Keeper Tested, April Approved"

April has continued to keep us all on edge today after the start of thick discharge, lots of tail raising, & obvious calf re-positioning. With all that excitement and anticipation, comes the need to also get goofy!

Animal Care Team members had the evening off for AAP sponsored staff bonding, so Jordan (and family) took control of the barn! Extra carrots, extra help, and an extra fluffy hay bed!

Couldn't get enough! She did not mind her visitors, and was agreeable to hands-on checks. Dr. Tim also noted in his check, she was a bit more "needy" and less "standoffish". 25 days till egg on the face! I think I will be ok! Calf tonight? I don't think so - but hey - I've been wrong before!

Contraction, gas, stretch, hard to tell, that`s her throwing those curve balls we mentioned

March 6th MORNING Update April the Giraffe

"Photos don't do it justice!" – Corey

As predicted – April's evening brought new changes this morning, prompting keeper notification sent to both park management and veterinary team.

Pictured:
Udders have filled.
We have yellow/cloudy discharge.

April the Giraffe Pregnant 2019 Live S tream

Dr Tim's request is to observe discharge amounts/presence throughout day. If still there this afternoon (steady discharge), it is good indication we are "there". Now of course, "there", could be hours, a day or so, perhaps… so I'll take the blame here and say – things are looking "imminent" (-Jordan).

What I will promise, it won't be two months of waiting!
Should we hit April 1st – I will literally wipe egg from my face!

March 5 Eveing  Update April the Giraffe

"She keeps me up at night!"

April had quite a night last night, and tonight will likely prove to be similar. Back end licks, tail raising, and "pushes" (imagined or not) – had us up, and watching – ready to initiate the Labor Alert Text System! One thing everyone can agree on, is April is enjoying her evening hay beds; whether for comfort, enrichment, or a late night snack!

This evening's photos show just how developed the udders are, and how swollen and raised her back end is.
To the naked eye, day to day, it appears we have enlargement/growth/fill.

March 5 Eveing  Update April the Giraffe

Behavior continues to be a bit spotty; specifically her changing interest in food which yields quicker vet and keeper checks. Some cam watchers have noted her new sparked interest in Oliver over the stall walls.

While cleaning stalls today, April enjoyed rubbing on and messing with Oliver – while he (of course) ate her remaining grain!

Perhaps some sleep tonight, but why do I think we'll be counting giraffes instead!

April continues to be a very much pregnant giraffe! She was reported as being a little "spooky" last evening, which was likely due to the many intense baby kicks observed by keepers. Wax caps are still present though, back left teat appears to be shedding. Appetite remains strong. Comparative video and photos from one week ago provide significant growth visuals.

April was reportedly on edge this afternoon during veterinary examination. This evening, keeper report suggests a bit more calm now.

There is a significant amount of belly movement and tail raising. Appetite is notably strong also.

.

March 5 Moring Update on April the Giraffe

To be very clear  that April has a spot she licks when she puts her neck to the body. She did this last time too. It's a small "spot". Not really a rash just a spot of irritation due to her licking.

Evidently Dr. Tim used the wrong term, for it to continue to cause questioning and concern. It's the size of a ping pong ball. (Giraffe tongue tip). April was licking last night without question.

We’ve learned my lesson about predictions but will once again use our favorite word – imminent!

Reviewing cameras

We see giraffes getting ready for breakfast in 30 mins

 Imminent by definition

Vet comes daily

Does she toss her food to the ground in prep for the baby because baby can lay on it, easily access it … or because she is saving a big bundle to eat without Ollie having access?

April is a hay tosser and loves it. She does not toss food though.

She really seems to like her new hay bed, will that become a regular thing for the giraffes in the future to make them more comforatable?

More:

Does April usually give birth in the morning hours?

Well, We are not sure. giraffe coats do not really change with the temps hence their needing suppelemtal heat or care.

Giraffes do not roll like a horse might

The Park is entirely handicap accessible now, We ra anxiou and read to have calf. Its not so much the process Its the birth first steps.

Giraffe tongues 16-18"

Oliver will likely grow more, bulls can reach 18" on average

Johari was cautions at first but has opened up, we will really see her shine one in the new yard

Hay scarves are new this year for April

The AWESOME staff that take care of  April the giraffe are Corey, Lucas, Kyle, Alexis, Colton, and Joel

Motion in the….Belly!

Dr Tim reports feeling more of the calf on the right side of April, than in prior days. Colton reports significant visible movement! Cam viewers – we know you see it too! This suggests the little one is moving around and positioning!

Interest in grain was not as strong at first when fed this evening, though she appears to be nibbling at this time. Behavior is a bit more noticeably off. While she is not showing any signs of aggression, or aggravation, she is not as keen to having visitors.

Pregnancy belly has never looked so good! Move over Beyonce — there is a new bump in town!

April, as many of you observed, had a good night but very active. A few times, she appeared to perhaps contract, but we cannot confirm that was the true reasoning. We must remember a 6' 150# baby is performing acrobatic routines inside! Keepers report she has a large appetite this morning, and is enjoying morning treats.

April has remained off grain again today, toys with her hay, turns up her nose at lettuce, but likes a DR Tim Carrot Treat!

Tonight will be another long night as we wait for April to decide just when is right!

The giraffes loved the beautiful weather outdoors today!

Many of you tuned in this evening to see lights out early. With normal routine returning of warm temps and yard time, coupled with the thought that a natural light cycle of the dusk and dawn type may help entice/speed up our labor, you will see us change our treat time and lights out routine to earlier in the day. When exactly? Depends on quite a bit…so keep watching!

.

10 am: March 4th update

Bed will be reestablished and added to each night we can leave soiled hay in fear It can be consumed, dirty hay out, clean hay kept for April the Giraffe in corner in evening when it will be applied to the stall.

We are stand by on without question

March 4 Morning update:

Morning reports are confirming significant growth/swell overnight

Back end and also April's sides (how she is carrying)

I CANOT STAY TO BUT DID WANT TO CONFIRM THOSE RESULTS AS I SEE A LOT OF CHATTER ABOUT THEM…..WE ARE CLOSE I HAVE A FEELING SHE IS GOING TO THROW CURVE BALLS THIS TIME.

March 3, 2019 Evening Update on April the Giraffe

April continues to advance, her size quite impressive!

She continues to show interest in food items and is accepting of keeper veterinary inspection. We do observe periods of neck extensions, tail raising, and "zoning out" – but could be due to a number of variables related to the pregnancy; calf movement, cramps, gas, etc.

April shows interest in hay, fair weather on grain. Otherwise, behavior is standard. A lot of behavior that had us on our toes but no acknowledgeable active labor at this time.
Colton reports significant calf movement! Her growth is perhaps more noticeable when compare like this versus day to do.
There is no doubt momma and calf are progressing and growing.
April is – without question – growing

1st March:

April 2019 April 2017
April continues to swell on the back end, with a slight discharge. Babies babies everywhere! Just not yet in the giraffe barn. We welcomed twin Barbados lambs (again) today and a Patagonian Cavy.
Mammary development is significant, with udders filling. April is well and is enjoying some early outside time before temperatures drop and storms move through later today into tomorrow.
Pacing and stargazing behavior observed. No major changes overnight.
Our entire team remains on standby.
While we are not in labor, we will continue to monitor progression.

This morning report is much like last evening`s, swell and mammary development are unchanged from last check, sligh discharge but for from a full mucus plug release

Behavior is munutely off.

Interest in grean initially the backed off, she is playng with hay more than eating, Her swelling on the back end is a bit more raised from the body

Starting March 1st, each evening, after the 7:30 pm eastern Keeper Check, we will provide an update

She stood up and started what looked like contractions idk but kept leaning forward and there was a Kick and out popped her hoo haa she had been walking funny as you can see and lots of tail raisingStall's will be cleaned when staff is ready.

Oliver is waiting for April to come over so they can have some shared shenanigans

Keepers will be in momentarily and perform their morning check

I`ve noticed a lot of tail lifting last night and this Am. April the Giraffe continues to have a thick bead of discharge. It is not a contant drip but it is present and confirmed not urine drip, ate less hay last night than usual but she is interested in grain. I hope you love to watch April the Giraffe Animal Adventure Park Live Stream

Mammary development still holding as prior, four distinct teats with wax caps. April`s behavior essentially normal during keeper interaction

Dr Tim is stoping dailly to assess April the Giraffe, Tajiri`s lady friend which today is the last day to name her.

Bedding will be added when in labor, mats are already down for April the Giraffe, less bedding the better at this time to allow quick clean outs as needed. We do not anticipate any bull behavior/breeding from Tajiri for another years, males mature on averagte at age 3. I know much better than to gues dates now for this delivery

 Previous update:

We contine to pray for a smooth propress , to play your part in the conversation about conservation is to do just that -talk about it! educate all that will listen. with due diligence, support the campaigns for conservation! education is power, when April is in labor we will ensure lights are on and cams adjusted as need. April is actually quite large.

Wax caps can be shed prior and redevelop, they can be off for labor/birth or sucked off by the calf, no true pattern, calves can breach which is problematic for mother, calf and team, plans are in place to address the situation should be presented

April the giraffe diet will remain the same post birth, she is receiving a fortified diet now with extra supplementation for calf and milk delelopment and will be contine post birth, for the extra calories.

Is April the Giraffe in labor 2019

There is only one way to understand what labor is when somthing is in labor it is having a baby at that time, we are not in labor yet

More:

Stall cleaning time with Corey today

When April the Giraffe is in conformed labor?

We will send out the text alert to notify all, we do not feed bananas either…fruit is not agreeable to many speeches, very high in sugar, leafy greans are still part of the diet but used for training purposes, this keep the allure going for it versus carrots which they are girfted daily

April very well can have contractions prior to full bown labor, days in advance even, contractions assist with moving the calf into position, stimulating mil production, etc..

We are of course camparing notes from 2017 to 2019 which is why we did not announce in January but on a serious note we learn from each experience.

Tail hair grows back, it is grown and shed or loss constantly, every pregrancy is different. Who knows what this time will yield for data and experences, swollen back end is agrea sign of advancement. April the giraffe has no singificant discharge at this time, much like other pregnant mom.

Pain? There is no pregancy is a very normal and natural thing for all livng animals, first come bubble then hooves

Tonight, April had minimal interest in her hay in the normal feeder, she did eat grain. Not a ton of baby movement but definitely alive and well. Slight discharge present (appears like a “booger”)

Mammary development the same, wax caps present, get yours mama booger watch 2019

Stalls are beed down again when belief that a calf is on the way, current bedding amoutns ( on top of mats) allows for quick clean outs as needed should we find ourselves in labor and needing to rebed

April the Giraffe Update : Day 1

Well, giraffe fans, it’s been some time since an update of this nature. Ironically on the anniversary of the camera truly going viral!

We did not anticipate doing anything like this for another 1-2 weeks.

April is advancing. Behavioral and physical changes are suggesting we are very much moving towards having a calf. Perhaps sooner than end of March, as originally predicted based on keeper observations. (But hey – we’ve been wrong before)

Wax caps have been present, udders are developing/filling.

Star gazing behaviors were observed today and lack luster interest in feed.

While we do not anticipate a calf this evening, tomorrow is another day.

We do have the labor text alert for those interested and not wanting to miss a moment:: HERE

We think there should be private winter days people can sign up to come visit Today I got to let the giraffes out into the yard. They've been inside for a while because it's been too cold and snowy and icy for them to be outside. It's amazing how something as little as letting the giraffes outside can brighten your day. Amazing how you see their freedom and can FEEL it as well and how in that moment you identify with a single movie quote. "I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me, but it's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once and it's too much. My heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst. And then I remember to relax and stop trying to hold on to it. And then it flows through me like rain, and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life." Today flows like rain. I am so grateful and lucky to be where and who I am in this moment.

Does the red and black give away that we’re @njdevils fans? This is one of my biggest career accomplishments to date. Getting April not only hold a paintbrush but to also put that paintbrush to a canvas has been a very long and sometimes very frustrating journey. I learned some more patience, she learned how to paint, and now we are making masterpieces together! Art with April is my own personal success. Here’s to more training success in the future. Make sure you check us out live every Tuesday at 1. Many more pieces to come.
